The Sleeping Woods [ Early morning, OPEN! ]
The grass beneath Áine's feet was not as soft as the grass on her mound, she decided as she rested beneath a massive oak. She had been walking for hours, not daring to risk flight lest she stumble upon another creature willing to direct her back home. She didn't know how she had come to this place, but assumed it was through some sort of portal she hadn't known about. If she was lucky, there were many of them, and she could get back home as quickly as possible.

She didn't think about what kind of life she would have if she went back to familiar surroundings. Her sidhe mound only protected from expansion by acts to preserve history, and not the belief she had thrived on for so long. In her mind, all that mattered was getting home, back to her own sidhe who were, no doubt, missing their queen as feircely as anything. In mer mind, in her musings, her court was still two hundred strong, not the handfull of emaciated good folk who had managed to survive the Vanishing Plague, as they were dubbing it in the hollow chambers of her home.

In her mind, a feast would greet the appearance of their queen. Many handsome fairy men would faun over her and feed her and one lucky one, the fairest of all, would follow her to her bed to properly welcome her home. She lay out on the ground, dew soothing her aching, tired feet as they curled on the grass. Not as soft as home, but soft enough.

"I'll be home," she murmured, her lowish feminine voice even strange to her after hours of silence. During her walk, she had wished to sing, but kept quiet. "Soon enough."

She yawned, tucking her arms behind her head. The morning was cool, but the fabric of her dress kept her warm. "I'll be home..." She whispered again, and, in the sound of her own voice, she detected a longing she had been repressing. Despite her daydreams, and her reassurances, she was still alone. And she desperately wanted someone to talk to.

The good thing about the Sleeping Woods was that Mowgli didn't have to leave them to find flowers. There were plenty about; he just needed to decided which ones he was going to pick. He'd decided first by colors: blues or whites and then with a grin, decided both.

Then he had to decide what kind, and that was a lot harder. He didn't know what any of the flowers he was picking were called, but he didn't think that was important. Soon enough he'd have a nice bunch of them, and he could go back to the lake. As he rounded another tree, he saw feet, people-feet. And then legs and a dress - a woman, not a man. He moved forward and kept looking. It was a very pretty woman and she looked very tired. Mowgli wasn't sure if he should say anything; maybe she was trying to sleep?

Áine blinked her eyes open, pulled back from semi-conciousness by something she couldn't identify. She saw the forest's canopy, as she had been expecting. Propping herself up on one elbow, she saw a man.

... which she had not been expecting.

Startled, Áine made a noise somewhere between the honk of a goose and the squeal of a terrified mouse. She stiffened, pulling herslef backwards. But the man didn't look dangerous, standing with flowers in his hands and looking rather curious, indeed.

When he didn't say anything, she did.

"... hello?"

((Again, my bad, I feel sort of dumb. XD. If that happens again, e-smack me.))

Mowgli jumped back when she made the odd noise. It sounded like two different animal noise in one and that was curious. Could she talk to animals too? But she was also surprised, maybe even scared and Mowgli realized he had startled her. He smiled, as friendly as he could and replied in a slow tone, "Hello. I am sorry. I scare you?"

He didn't move any closer; he stayed right where he was instead of risking the chance that he might scare her some more. He just cocked his head at her and waited for her reply.

[It's okay! I should have been more explicit too!]

Okay, so he hadn't done anything violent, or devious, or... hey, he was being nice. She blinked, sitting up in a more dignified position and tucking errant strands of hair behind her ears. "Um, a little, it's okay. That's what you get for resting in the woods, I guess. I, erm..."

She looked up, studying his face. She didn't see any evil there. As a matter of fact, she couldn't help but find his overall demeanour amazingly endearing. She smiled, unable to help herself.

"I'm Áine," She said, clearing her throat. "What's your name?"

Mowgli sat across from her, up on his haunches, more like an animal than a man. His head was still tilted, studying her, as if he was trying to figure her out. "My name is Mowgli," he responded after a long pause. And then he added, just as slowly. "I'm sorry I scare you. It was... a mistake."

Áine shook her head, "It's fine, Mowgli. I don't mind, I was just... surprised." She smiled her winning smile, eyes falling on the collection of beautiful flowers clutched in his hands.

"Those are very pretty. Who are they for?"

Mowgli liked her smile. Smiles always made him happy, because he had liked doing it, and when he was younger no animals ever did. To them it was a baring of fang, a challenge, and Mowgli never felt that way. The first human smile he said had him beaming back immediately, and this was no different.

Mowgli looked down at the flowers and his smile became softer, almost that was almost childlike. "They are for Swan," he answered, and touched one white flower petal. He really did hope Swan liked them... He looked up. "Do you know Swan?"

She watched him, trying to hide her facination. She had never seen anyone like this man before. He looked like a man, he sat like an animal, he spoke like a child... not even the young sidhe, those sho had broken her ranks and been 'wild' in the days when her court was strong, had acted with anything as facinating as he was now.

She shook off her wonder to speak. "No, I don't. I don't know very many people here. I'm..." She inhaled, a look of determination crossing her face, "I haven't been here long, and I won't be here for much longer. I have to go home, you see. To Ireland."

Mowgli went back to looking properly confused. "Eye-er-land?" He sounded the word out; it was entirely unfamiliar to him and thus he repeated it to himself before he looked back at her. "I don't know many people here also. I know Swan and Tiny and Puss and now you." Had he left anyone out? And then he added, "Where's Eye-er-land?"

Áine sighed, "Well, maybe you can introduce them to me, because it looks like I might be here for a while." She ran a hand through her hair, for a moment feeling very old. She gave another smile, this one a little tired.

"Ireland... Ireland is the most beautiful place. Everything seems green there, and not the kind of green anyone could possibly know unless they went there. It's in Europe...?" She sighed. "Which, unless my direction fails me, is very far away from here. I don't even know how I got here."
From: [info]man_cub Date: 11/14/2007 14:35:03

'Europe' was as unfamiliar a word as 'Ireland' was. He tried to remember the name of the country he was from, that the people in the man-village taught him. He remembered India, and he remembered... England? England was far away, maybe far like Ireland? "It's green here too, and there's a jungle and it's green there. There are a lot of places I haven't been to... But you can meet the people I know. They are really nice."

It was the most he'd said so far, and he was still taking his time to say it. "Is Eye-er-land near Ing-land?" He asked the question rather suddenly, or so it appeared outwardly. Inwardly his thoughts had taken him back to his previous train.

Áine's entire body seemed to perk at the sound of the familar land's name. "Yes! They're right next to each other, accross a sea. Do you know England? Is there... is there any way to get there?"

She tried to calm her obvious excitement by taking a deep breath and thinking of everything else he had said. "Yes, the green here is beautiful. I've never been to the jungle, I'll have to explore there. And I'm glad to hear that you've met nice people." She smiled again.

Mowgli wasn't sure what he'd done to garner that reaction. He stared at her eyes wide and replied, "I learned about Ing-land, when I lived in the man village, but I did not live there. I lived in... In-dee-ah. I think. And then I walked away from the village because people were mean there and I kept walking and walking and then I was in the jungle and then I came here." He frowned. "Ing-land was not near In-dee-ah, but we both walked and now we are here. I don't understand."

((Oh, my, I'm afraid I've been terribly inactive. I made a post about being online more, and then I never was. School's been insane. Have I dug myself too deep, or can I still be considered part of this community if I promise I'll be good and... actually come on ever? Heck. I can upgrade that to regularly.))

[It's ok. You need a temporary hiatus or something at least till finals are over? A lot of people are really busy because of school!]
